Marjorie Mae Park . 701 Marjorie Mae St, State College, PA 16803 . Patton Township

Marjorie Mae Park is a nearly 5 acre open space with a playground, covered picnic table, cul du sac street parking and a bike path.  The park is nearly full sun due to the smaller size trees, but as these trees grow over the years, they will provide nice shade for the playground.  There is no toilet and no drinking fountain.  This is a good park option if you're in the neighborhood and want to take the kids somewhere new for a short time.  The bike path is straight and long, so could be a good spot to practice bike riding or scooter.

Suburban Park . 101 Suburban Ave, State College, PA 16803 . Ferguson Township

Suburban Park is off Aaron Drive behind shops on Atherton and Vairo Boulevard and has a dedicated parking lot with space for approximately 20 cars and one handicap space.  The playground is not visible from the parking lot, but is a short walk along the paved bike path past the tennis courts and baseball field.

The playground has 2 play structures, 2 bucket swings, 2 regular swings and a bridge to cross a small ditch to access a large slide and 4 swings.  The playground area is semi shaded and has one pavilion, several benches, and a portable toilet and a water fountain adjacent to tennis courts. The day I visited (9/3/15) the water fountain was not working.

In addition to the CRPR Parks website, Ferguson Township maintains a website dedicated to information about parks in the township.  It's a great, additional resource.  Please visit the Township's Suburban Park page for more images and information.

Pets at the Parks . Can I bring my dog?

If you would like to bring your dog, or pet, to a local park, please visit General Park Rules for more information about which parks allow pets and any associated restrictions.  If pets are allowed at an area park, they must always be on a leash, except for Tudek Dog Park, located at 425 Park Crest Lane in State College.

Govenors Park . Govenors Park Road . Bellefonte, PA 16823

Govenors Park is a large space with numerous trees providing great shade throughout the day.  The playground is fairly small, but the picnic pavilions are plentiful.  I did not explore this park fully, but did see a baseball field and found two restroom buildings.  There is no designated parking lot, but a paved path through the park with some paved parking spots, but also ample parking space in the grass adjacent to the driveway.  Accessing the park from Airport Road is fairly straightforward and there are signs pointing to the park.  Veer right at the Y intersection where you see the sign for the Ville Du Parc Townhouses.  These townhouses will be on your left and you will turn right into the park area.  Take a left at the Welcome to Govenors Park sign to access the playground.

Sunset Park . 850 McKee Street, State College, PA 16803 . State College Borough

Sunset Park is one of the best options for all day shade with numerous large trees covering this spacious park that dates back to the 1950s.  Accessing the park from Park Avenue onto McKee street is easiest as this neighborhood (East College Heights) has lots of blocked roads.  There is a large parking lot for the park at the end of McKee Street on the left side.  The park offers:
  • Large playground area designated for ages 5-12 (see pictures and descriptions)
  • 2 fitness/exercise stations for adults and children
  • 1 full basketball court
  • 2 horseshoe stations
  • 1 sand volleyball court
  • 1 permanent restroom building (open seasonally only)
  • 2 picnic pavilions.  Additional tables and benches scattered throughout the park
  • 1 youth baseball diamond

Welcome to this blog!

The focus of this blog is to highlight public parks in the State College area and surrounding towns. Please visit Centre Region Parks and Recreation (CRPR) website for a complete list of all parks by location, activity and more.  This blog is created by a local mom to provide pictures, reviews and information regarding sun, shade, type of playground equipment, parking and other tidbits that would be helpful for parents to know before deciding which park is best on a particular day to take the kids to play.  Please enjoy and maybe even find a new favorite park!
